Newsletter 1st October 2007

Hi All

I hope that you have all had a good break and that you are ready to come back for some more hard training.

Last term was a strange term with many people missing many sessions due to work commitments. As a result, it has been hard to plan the sessions in any great detail. But that is all cool, work and study, and family etc must come first.

It was also strange in that we had to take a week’s break due to the school production. Because of that, we had to cancel the kids’ end of term sparring and kata competitions in order to reschedule some gradings.

And, on that note, we would like to congratulate Ben Smith and Sam Wilkinson for successfully passing their Junior Purple Belts. Also, our warmest congratulations go to Jelena Downey for successfully passing her Junior Black Belt – her standard on the night was superb and it is always a joy for us to sit back and watch what (for Jelena) was the result of over 7-years hard work. Well done, we are very proud of you.

As most of you will be aware, there are going to be some changes next term to the junior club next term. As most of the kids in that group now train only once a week, we have decided to offer kids classes on Wednesdays only.

Replacing the kids’ Monday session will be an instructor’s class. We have, for a long time, wanted to invest more time into our instructors. They selflessly give their time to help teach others at the sacrifice of their own learning and we feel that it is time for that to change. Monday’s between 6 PM and 7 PM will now be an adult’s black belt class. It is our hope that all of our students will benefit from this investment and it is also a chance for Helena and I to develop the style further to new levels. We are very excited about this initiative.

The prices for next term will be as follows:

Immediate families with more than two members training will be allowed 50% discount on the third family member. Please pay as soon as you can after the start of term: the dates for next term are:

Wednesday 10th October – Wednesday 12th December.

Our instructor’s meeting will be held on Monday 8th October at 6:30 PM. If you are a brown belt or above, and wish to instruct – please attend.

Our annual summer camp this year will start on Friday 09-Nov at 6:00 PM – Sunday 11-Nov 12 PM. There will be 5 two hour session, interspersed with some good food, good lies and good drinks – it will be our fifth annual camp and we always have a very good time. It will be open to anybody in the Adult’s group at orange belt or above. Please let me know as soon as possible if you intend to come along – we will be charging only at cost price, but the hall at Pukehina Beach is very expensive and we need to know how many of you we can expect before we can inform of costs. We will let you know what you need to bring with you later.

Lastly, this club only exists because of our members. We are keen to increase the membership numbers in both our Adults’ group and our kids’ group. I would like to ask each and every one of you to scout around for people who may be interested in starting to train with us. If anybody is able to put up posters at your place of work, or your local supermarket or you local dairy then please contact me and we’ll get you some posters.

We know that it is groups of people training together that do best. And remember, we do train a genuine self-defence oriented style of karate. What we know and practice is vanishingly rare!

Both Helena and I look forward to seeing you for a great term!

Cheers

Guss & Helena Wilkinson
